I am Mrs. Briggs and I have had the honor of teaching middle schoolers in Haslett since 2005 with all but one of those years in my favorite subject, Language Arts.
Language Arts will have us exploring the areas of reading, writing, grammar, spelling, vocabulary, listening, speaking, viewing, and most importantly - thinking! Through our Language Arts literature anthology of short fiction, informational text, drama, poetry, and novels, you will expand your literacy skills to help you succeed beyond the classroom in school and life. Please visit our Google Classroom for more information!
I look forward to working with you to make this year a great one!
Learning Resources
Spelling Tips
If your child is having difficulty with spelling certain words, try a variety of ways to practice them:
* Sound them out together. Break the word into parts and examine how the word is put together.
* Practice the words orally.
* Try pyramid practice. For example, with the spelling word "rhyme":
r
rh
rhy
rhym
rhyme
* Have the student write each word five times.
* Have the student write the words in sentences and then check the sentences together.
* Give the student a practice test and then check it together - continue testing the words the student misses until 100% is achieved.
* Write the words in a pan of shaving cream, salt, or flour, or in the snow.

Writing Tips
The Writing Process: prewriting, drafting, revising, editing, publishing.
* Students will be learning and practicing a variety of writing styles and formats. * It is okay to help your children brainstorm topics if they is having difficulty. However, make sure that your children are comfortable with the topic they decide on, and feel like it is something they can write about. * Students should be able to do the first draft on their own. Let them write down their own thoughts and ideas. * When it is time to revise, please take the time to constructively give ideas for a stronger piece of writing. At this stage in the writing process, students should be given a variety of types of feedback, and then decide on their own what changes to make. * After revisions are made, it is time for editing. We practice editing often in class as it correlates with what we are reading and writing. It is important for students to be able to find many of the errors on their own. Have your children edit their paper first, then go through the paper with them. * A final copy should be typed by students if possible, or else written neatly in ink. Feel free to help proofread and edit the final, but allow students to make any finishing touches. |
